Linda was very open to Quarter Horses dressaging and her comments were extremely positive and well received by all on the day. Linda was happy to switch from test to test for our riders. The tests picked were the same as the AQHA Nationals Q8 patterns.

Sue Ganzer once again came along to provide lovely sandwiches and tea/coffee as well as nice chocolate cake for all who spectated or rode. It s very much appreciated by all, to be able to feed yourself something at a horse show is always welcomed by riders and handlers. Much quicker to fill a hay bag than organise your own food!! All funds raised by canteens at B shows are allocated to the WAQHA Youth Fund. Pencillers on the day were Janeen McRobert and Sue Benthien with the Judge checking the scores. Thanks to Mary Treloar for being Office Manager once again.

The judge did allow for callers to read tests for riders, which was very appreciated by riders. The rain pelting down during some tests did make for very limited hearing, but on the whole all tests were completed with little distraction or delay. Typically the weather on Saturday was brilliant!!

First event of the day was Junior Horse Dressage Pattern Novice 2.2; 1st place to SOQ Shining Barpasser Q55569 owned by Sue Benthien and ridden on the day by Tahnee. This clinic was presented mainly due to the great turnout of Youth riders recently at shows. The numbers have been quite high in recent Youth events, so to encourage the riders and to hopefully ensure that they continue to attend shows the clinic was held. Originally the clinic was to be a lead up type event to support an applicant for the Trans Tasman Youth Challenge, but with the outbreak of EI on the East coast the TTYC was cancelled.

Karen Nicoletto has recently been appointed to the Coach’s position for Australian AQHA Youth World Cup team members, who will be attending the event in July 2008 at London, Ontario Canada. Tahnee White has been a member of the Australian AQHA Youth World Cup team for the 2004 Youth World Cup event that was held in Australia, as well as being very competitive in WA and on the East coast during her Youth riding career.

Both of the clinicians used for the Youth clinic were very friendly and extremely approachable to the Youth riders. This combination of clinicians worked extremely effectively on the day, Youth riders received plenty of instruction and had plenty of opportunities to work with both clinicians during the day.

Our eight riders for the day were Carly Ganzer, Kelsie-Lee Harrington, Jade Riches, Jaiden Thompson, Asha Morris, Georgia Lawrie, Stephanie Bedden and Georgia Brandham. This number of riders was perfect for the indoor and the outdoor arenas, not enough to congest the arena, not too many to have individual help and not too busy to bump into each other riding around.

Thanks must go to Sue Moffat who kindly organised the lunches and drinks for the day, ensuring there were plenty of goodies to eat for all who required sustenance during the day and for bringing the trail gear, thanks to Kevin James delivering and for the loan of the BBQ, Tania Harrington for helping out with the catering, Mary Treloar for being the office manager, and Mindi Thompson for organising paperwork needed for the day.

No one would have thought the weather in December in Perth would be chilly, rainy and windy, not the weather you think of when you say Xmas time in WA. But the cool temperatures were appreciated by horses and riders in the arena, ensuring that the work out kept the horses and riders nice and warm.

The clinic started off with Showmanship at Halter, the Youth were given a talk on what the requirements are for Showmanship and how to effectively show yourself off as well as showing your horse to its potential during this event and the use of Showmanship techniques that can be utilised in other Halter events. Then a couple of patterns were set up and the clinic split into two groups to give the handlers extra attempts at the different patterns, which required different manoeuvrers.

Next on the day’s agenda was a group photo, which with 8 horses, 8 riders and 2 clinicians was not as easy as first thought. There is always the horse that moves and jiggles around, a couple that fall asleep and won’t wake up for pictures and the obligatory cranky horse. With a few people snapping pics let’s hope that one of them turns out OK. Time for morning tea, the lovely cake, biscuits and other goodies very quickly disappeared.

A quick walk around the back of the indoor arena and everyone is putting English gear on the horses and putting on their safety helmets. Back into the indoor arena and the clinicians focused on Hunt Seat Equitation and the many uses of this discipline within other events. A pattern was set in the arena and Tahnee rode the pattern showing the riders how to properly execute as required. Then one by one the riders took up the challenge of the pattern. Once all had completed the patterns several times, a more complex pattern was selected from the pattern book and once again Tahnee executing the pattern while Karen pointed out the manoeuvres required in the pattern. All the riders then proceeded to ride the pattern, and while waiting their turn could see and discuss the other patterns being completed.

As the morning proceeded the riders moved along to the outdoor arena and the Hunter Hack section of the clinic commenced. Naturally the wind the picked up pace, but the horses were calm and sensible. All the riders went through the paces, first the trot poles then over the small jump. For safety reasons the jump height was only about 1 ft as some of the horses were new to the event but they all took to it with relish, the horses seemed to enjoy the outdoor arena and the opportunity to try something different. As is usual there were many different styles of jumping seen, some trotting over, some cantering over, some tripping over and some of the horses had obviously read the rule book and interpreted the rules themselves, but at the end of the session the riders were smiling and the horses had safely carried their riders around the arena.

Next on the agenda is lunch, very important to horses, riders and spectators. The lovely BBQ sausages or hot dogs went down well in the cold weather, along with cold drinks, more yummy snacks, water and hot drinks available. And a hay bag or hard feed and a big drink for the very well behaved horses.

Before the lunch break finished the trail gear was set up in the indoor arena, a gate, bridge, back thru, side-pass obstacle, jog poles and cones. After discussing the trail event the riders were paired off, more experience show riders with newcomers to the event, and in pairs they completed various parts of the trail course together, helping and aiding each other through the obstacles. The time spent on trail was successful, all the horses completing each obstacle with more style, precision and ease by the end of the session.

Last event for the day was Western Pleasure, all the riders went onto the rail and one by one they jogged and loped as required for the clinicians, with encouragement and advice being offered to them. The difference was quite visible at the outcome, with all learning some new information to help them progress in this discipline.

Thanks must go to all parents who stayed to watch and encourage their children; it’s always nice to see your child enjoying themselves and nice to see interested parents. Thanks to Roxanne for the great venue once again, to both Karen and Tahnee for ensuring every child received attention and encouragement. Thanks to She-Oak Quarterhorses, Mary Treloar and Janeen McRobert for the loan of horses for the Youth to ride at the clinic. Thanks to all who helped set up and dismantle the trail obstacles and thanks to Justin Spriggs for de-mystifying the trailer tie downs.

And last but not least, thanks to the great nature of the Australian Quarter Horse, so gentle so versatile and trustworthy enough for young riders to learn on, they really are wonderful creatures. It is so amazing to know that these horses are so strong and yet so gentle, allowing us to hop onboard and enjoy their company.

WAQHA 2 day AA Bonanza Show

27th & 28th October 2007
State Equestrian Centre, Brigadoon

The first official show for the WAQHA new show year was at the SEC in Brigadoon, judged by the lovely Mrs Debbie Watson. Debbie who is the wife of Greg Watson - an AQHA Board Member, is an accredited AQHA and AmQHA Oceania Judge. Debbie has judged at the Nationals, Stewarded at the Nationals, judged quite a few Royal shows, the list goes on……Their daughter Stephanie also travelled over to WA with her mother to generously Steward for the 2 day show. The Dressage Judge was Mrs Chris Hope, who recently emigrated to WA. Thank you to these great people, for without a Judge, the show does not go on.

The program for the show included a variety of events, with the traditional Halter, Showmanship, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation, Trail, Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Reining, and Western Riding. Other events added to the program were American Quarter Horse Classes, Amateur Halter, State & Eastern State Bred Halter, Lunge Line, Led Trail, Hacking, Hunter Futurities, Dressage and Western Pleasure Futurities. The categories for events were Youth, Senior Horse, Junior Horse, Amateur Junior Horse, Amateur Senior Horse, AmQHA and Select Amateur. With this many events on the program, every competitor had plenty of choice.

The weather for the 2 day show didn’t really encourage horse showing, but with over 80 entries & rising, it was looking to be a great weekend. Gale force winds whipping through the outdoor marshalling area blowing up clouds of dust, torrential rain and chilly temps didn’t deter our dedicated showies from attending. Perhaps the inclement weather was brought over to WA with Geoff, Tina and their daughter Joanna Hutson. Geoff, from Oz West Saddlery, kindly came over to WA and brought with him some beautiful show and work gear for sale, a lovely show saddle, plenty of halters and bridles for all to check out. A track of wet footprints led a trail to the area where the saddlery was displayed. Tina, Joanna and Geoff also very kindly donated a beautiful pair of tooled leather spur straps to one of the Western Pleasure Futurity events, with Jo presenting the prize to the winner.

Due to extremely stringent WA DPI requirements concerning EI, the show was preceded by plenty of paperwork for competitors, the committee and the office girls. With disinfectant on hand, thermometers poised, the local vet on standby, signs posted all over the centre with information, and the announcer Kevin James reminding all to ensure we keep WA free from EI, the show finally proceeded. The competitors package that is handed out to all with show numbers, sponsors information, patterns and general show information etc, also included were several WA DPI pamphlets concerning the spread of EI and common sense ways that we all can keep our beloved horses safe and secure.

Several people had booked time in the indoor arena on the Friday afternoon to warm up horses and check out how they are performing in the indoor arena, which probably was the best spot to be on Friday afternoon as the rain pelted down and soaked everything it touched, several people were seen washing horses at the wash bays in the pouring rain.

The first events on the program were the Halter classes, followed by the Amateur Halter classes and the American Halter classes. The WAQHA is proud to present the American Halter events, this encourages American membership while providing events for those that have horses registered with the AmQHA. The next events were the State Bred classes. One class is for WA Bred progeny the other is for ES Bred progeny, the deciding factor of which class you enter is where the progeny’s sire resides. These events have become extremely popular in WA, with money being paid out to the top place getters and lovely ribbons being presented. With over 15 entered in each event it’s certainly a great way for the club to fill the coffers, while the competitors received cash prize money and another turn at haltering their horse in the lovely indoor arena.

Next were the Showmanship classes, always a great event in WA. The Youth class and the Amateur class is always a good one to watch & see if you can place the same as the Judge does. Patterns provided by the Judge were testing and the competitors worked hard to ensure they were in the placings.

A short break was next on the program to set up for the Yearling and 2 yr old Lunge Line and Led Trail events. These events have gained popularity in WA, providing an opportunity for owners to accustom their horses to the obstacles used in Trail events. With plenty of new stock coming into the arena each show season, it’s great to see that these exhibits continue their show careers in show arena.

Once these events were completed and exhibits were sashed accordingly, the indoor arena was opened for all to ride. With most of the riders in the English events taking advantage of this opportunity, the indoor arena quickly filled up with riders in every inch of the arena. It’s a great sight to see so many horses being warmed up, and with the Youth entries being quite high, there were plenty of young riders out there hugging their piece of the rail !! There were Youth riders everywhere, such a great sight to see, with plenty of proud parents on the sidelines showing their encouragement to all the Youth.

While everyone was indoors riding, the Judge, Steward, Dressage Judge, non competing committee members, volunteers, guests and workers all had lunch and probably a nice sit down and relaxing ½ hour. Once the lunch break was over the indoor arena was cleared of riders and the show re-commenced with the Hunter Under Saddle classes, followed by the Hunt Seat Equitation events. The Hack events were followed by the Hunter Futurities. The last events of the day were the Dressage events. The outdoor International Arena was the setting for the Dressage, and with a small sprinkling of rain, the riders completed the Preliminary Test 1.3 and ducked back under cover.

The Saturday’s events were over !! Time for all to congregate and have some fun. Dinner was eaten in the breezeways standing up, with the rain pelting down. Unfortunately this dodgy weather diminished the amount of socialising but plenty of fun was still had, along with time to chat to show buddies, pack up gear and get prepped for the next day’s showing.

Sunday’s weather was a lot kinder to us, with only ½ strength gale force winds but no rain !! The show commenced with Reining events, this was followed by a short break to set up the Trail equipment in the indoor arena. Trail events are also another popular event in WA and with 7 Trail classes to be ridden, the lunch break was after the Trail events had ended. Another well deserved break for the Judge, Steward, and all workers.

Western Riding commenced back in the arena with Western Horsemanship to follow. The events quite a few people had waited to see was about to start – Western Pleasure and the Western Pleasure Futurities !! These events are also popular with competitors, and probably the workers of the day, no equipment to organise, just a nice clear arena with a Judge and a Steward in the middle.

Sponsors for the show included the AQHA Amateur Division who provided 2 Amateur Division rugs. These rugs were allocated to the Amateur Showmanship and the Amateur Western Horsemanship. The winner of the Amateur Showmanship was Sonia Riches showing Isle B Tuned A2-533, the other rug being presented to Paula Di Candilo for winning the Amateur Western Horsemanship riding Winderadeen Cee B King Q 52939. Joanna Hutson presented the Oz West Saddlery show leather tooled spur straps to Rae Hare riding RSVP To Willy Q59320 in the Junior Horse Western Pleasure. Committee Member Jean Saville donated several garlands to the show. Winner of one was Lesley Elder riding AG Beaver San Q35734 in the Senior Horse Western Pleasure. Another garland was allocated to the Youth Western Horsemanship, won by Jade Riches riding Isle B Tuned A2-533.

Thanks to all the following people for helping the WAQHA present another successful show. Thanks to Debbie & Stephanie Watson for coming over and being so friendly, Karen Nicoletto & family for taking Debbie & Stephanie touring around Fremantle after the show, Kevin James for doing such a superb job announcing during the 2 days of the show, our office manager Mary Treloar for being such a legend as always, the office lady Julie Cranfield keeping the paperwork in order, our Indoor Gate Marshals Jean Saville and Sarah Hutchins, the outdoor Marshal Phayme Tedd, these ladies keeping the competitors flowing into the arena for the Judge to judge, Debbie Cameron for organising and preparing many of the prizes, once again ensuring all the Youth received something for each event, Mindi Thompson for organising lots of details and for selecting such a great judge !! Thank you to the Dressage Judge Mrs Chris Hope who waited for quite some time and allowed us to ride when the time suited us the best. Must also thank the owners of horses lent for the weekend to Joanna Hutson to compete with; Lesley Elder & AG Beaver San Q35734 and Janeen McRobert & Arrum Q45672. Thanks to Geoff, Tina and Joanna Hutson for making the big trek to WA and for bringing great gear for our competitors and spectators to purchase first hand. Any items not sold at the show are for sale, please contact the WA Agent for Oz West Saddlery – Brian Cramp at Sunninghill Equestrian Centre. Thanks once again to the AQHA Amateur Division for the sponsorship of the 2 lovely rugs, we finally gave them out and have the pics to prove it !!!

<col width="231"> <col width="308"> <col width="23"> <col width="266">

High Point Awards 2007

Award

Winner

Runer-up

FILLY 1 &
