WAQHA Encouragement Show
26th April 2009
Brookleigh Equestrian Centre

By Janeen McRobert

With perfect weather, the WAQHA Encouragement show commenced at 9 am sharp. The Venue was Brookleigh Equestrian Centre, a premier venue for equestrian activities. It had been quite some time since the WAQHA presented a show at Brookleigh and with such a positive response to the show and the venue, more events may be planned for this venue in the future.

Entries were quite high, with good numbers in the categories. The WAQHA recognises the importance of encouraging our new and future members, and this show seemed to be just what was required. The categories on the day included Amateur, Youth, Beginner and Novice. No Open events were programmed, so the club could concentrate on welcoming members into a show situation. The official classes were run under AQHA rules, but the Beginner competitors only needed to walk/jog or trot, with Novice category being required to lope or canter where required.

The day started with Amateur Halter, followed by Youth Halter, Beginner Halter and Novice Halter. The only events on the day that accumulated AQHA or WAQHA points were the Amateur and the Youth categories, but all categories were eligible for Hi Point awards on the day.

Ring steward Carly Ganzer with Chloe Blackaller and Helter Kings Sapphire

Showmanship was next, with some good patterns being completed. The pattern was simple, jog to 2nd cone, pause, then jog a circle around the cone and present to the judge. The judge then explained to the Beginner class why they placed as they did, informing competitors that although they may have executed the pattern correctly, touching the horse is a no-no in showmanship.

A quick break and then Hunter Under Saddle events commenced. With the Amateur and Youth classes completed, it was time to split the Beginner HUS class into from over 20 entries into 2 go-rounds and then choose 4 competitors for the final round. Spectators were asked to not distract horses or riders in the arena, with some horses and riders competing indoors or even competing for their first ever show. The Hunt Seat Equitation classes were next, another simple pattern to execute, and with the pattern being spread over a large area, most of the competitors completed the pattern in fine form.

A half an hour lunch break, and it’s outside to buy a BBQ sausage sizzle that the local Paint horse association, Statewide Paint Horse Society, organised. Thanks to Laurice Potter for all your help. Plenty of cool drink, or water to choose from and a lovely sausage or pattie in a bun with sauce and freshly cooked onions.

Jasslyn Robinson riding Rock Me Kid

Back into the show and the first western events of the day are the Western Pleasure classes. And with 31 entries in the Beginner WP, the show committee decided to split the class into 3 go rounds with a final class. Safety is always a consideration when class numbers rise to double figures. Congratulations to the 9 riders that showed in the final event, placing from 1 – 9 out of 31 in a class.

Western Horsemanship was next, the pattern being jog the cones, lope a circle, jog around the poles and lope to the finish. And as the day was progressing, the sun was going down and the chill factor set in. So the trail course was set up and the classes commenced. The pattern was jog cones, walk bridge, jog poles, lope to gate, work gate, jog a cone, work the gate, lope to the back thru, back thru, then side pass and walk to the finish cones. With the last of the day’s events over, it was time for the Hi Point Presentations to commence.

Congratulations to Alex McCooke who received his participation Award at the show on Sunday. These awards were presented at the State Show, but Alex had to leave to return to school before the presentations commenced. Thanks to Kerry & Steve Blackaller once again for donating these Youth participation awards to all Youth who competed at the State Show.

4158 Boyd Treloar holding Triandibo In The Red Jeff Gates holding QB Senors Lucky Last

Thanks to our great workers and volunteers who helped put this show together. Show Secretary Mary Treloar, Show Managers Sharon Currie and Elise Young, Judge Janeen McRobert, Ring Steward Carly Ganzer, Gate Marshalls Tracey Bruce, Sarah Stuart, Jenny Barnes and Elise Young again. Thanks to Boyd Treloar for bringing the trail gear and setting it up for the classes and Jeff Gates for once again helping out on the day. Sue Benthien organised custom embroidered WAQHA caps to be sold on the day, if you would like to buy a WAQHA cap, they will be on sale at our next show or event.

Thanks to all competitors and spectators, your enthusiasm and appreciation is very warmly received by the WAQHA committee. Thanks also to our wonderful sponsors who donated items for Hi Point awards, without so many great sponsors our competitors would not receive such a great variety of prizes during our show year.

Di Candilo Steel City WAQHA 2009 State Championship Show
20th - 22nd March 2009
State Equestrian Centre
Judges : Mrs Majorie Radford & Mr Mark Chamberlin

By Janeen McRobert

The WAQHA 2009 State Championship Show was held this year over 3 days, March 20-22 2009 at the State Equestrian Centre, Cathedral Avenue, Brigadoon and sponsored by Di Candilo Steel City. The decision to make the show into a 3-day event was enthusiastically embraced by competitors. Rather than having a rushed Saturday, this allowed for a more relaxed atmosphere for all at the show.

The 1st day of the show was outdoors and was programmed for all the traditional English type events. The Dressage events were held on the International Dressage arena, with the Hacking and Hunter Hack held on the main grassed polo field. Our judge for the day’s events was well known dressage competitor and EFA judge, Mrs Majorie Radford. Marjorie was friendly and easy to deal with and had good comments about the horses being presented on the day. Liz Ivankovich pencilled for the dressage and Liz Hides was the Gate Marshall as well as collating the test results. Mindi Thompson helped out with ribbon presentations and prize organisation. Sue Benthien organised lunch for the Judges for the 3-day show. The dressage started off slowly at 9.00 am but competitors quickly appeared for their events, keen to compete and find out their results. The last test took place at about 1.00 pm, and with only quick breaks in-between to present ribbons, the time flew by. The eventual tally of tests was about 30 to be completed.

With a 30-minute lunch break for the judge and workers, it was plenty of time for all to change if required and be back on the field for the next set of events. The hacking events went quickly, with the horses and riders really showing their range of movements. These events allow the horses to move forward in an engaging manner while still being obedient and receptive to commands from the riders. Some very pretty browbands were on display, blinging it up English style. Once the Hack events were completed there was another 20-minute break for competitors to change gear or equipment if required and to warm up the horses over the practice jumps. The jumps were set up and the club was fortunate enough to have as a spectator and an on the spur of the moment jump checker, Anna McGregor, well-known show jumper. Once the jumps were in place and the warm up completed, the class commenced. The pattern was simple; jump the two jumps in the required pattern and then a hand gallop back to the line-up. There was some slow and some fast hand gallops to be seen, a huge variance of gait shown.

Once all the days’ events were completed, the judge was presented with wine as was the photographer, the workers and the videographers. Palmer Wines, a supportive sponsor of the WAQHA, donated all wine presented during the show. Prizes given out during the day ranged from customised dressage pads, english saddle pads, fleece bridle bags, helmet covers, a rug, girth covers and cash prize money. Thanks to the photographer Peter Fredericks, who took images from all 3 days of the show, and to Michelle Wrighton who came along on Friday and videographed the day for competitors. Sponsors for the day were : She-Oak Quarterhorses, Janeen McRobert, Cavaletti.com, Stockyard.net, Wildwood Quarterhorses, Sharon Currie & Josh Jupp, Horse Habit, Saddleworld Maddington, Saddles Plus Byford and Regent Park Stockfeeds.

The day finished at about 3.30 pm, which was fantastic, not too late to prep up for the next day and to catch up with everyone who had arrived during the day. Luckily the weather that was forecast didn’t eventuate, and the day proceeded with only a couple of tiny sprinkles dropping from the sky. The spectators were out in force all during the day, supporting their friends or family competing in the classes. With plenty of favourable comments about the day’s program it could become a regular feature day for future state championship shows.

The Saturday program started bright and early, 8.30 am sharp. The judge for the Saturday and Sunday of the show was Mr Mark Chamberlin, AmQHA Judge, from NZ. Mark was very friendly both days of the show, completely organised and totally professional in his approach. Having an AmQHA qualified judge allows the WAQHA to present AmQHA classes for competitors thus ensuring that the money spent on registering a horse with AmQHA is worth the effort.

Workers for the show were the President Mary Treloar in the office, Sarah Stuart our capable Gate Marshall, Tracey Bruce a great Ring Steward, along with the ever efficient Elise Young, Lia Lee, Mike Donovan and Jeff Gates. Competitors were milling around the indoor arena before the show began, keen to get inside and get that State Champion title!. Halter events were programmed first, followed by Amateur Halter and AmQHA Halter. A new category included was Youth Halter classes, with some good numbers entered, it was a great event for our Youth to gain more experience showing in Halter and to accumulate points. Showmanship was next, followed by a quick break. She-Oak Quarterhorses donated flower garlands for all Amateur Champion halter exhibits, with stallion services being offered to the Champion Mare halter for QH, Amateur & AmQHA events. Thanks to Kintore Paint & QH Stud – Zippinoffwiththeloot / Kintoreradicalperfection and Paralna Performance Horses – Hootchy’s Playboy, for their Stallion Service donations. Mal Anderson donated buckles for all Amateur Halter Champions, which were very enthusiastically received. She-Oak Quarterhorses sponsored the AmQHA events.

During the break the trail gear for the Yearling Led Trail events was set up in the arena. Once the pattern was set, the break was over and the Yearlings came back to the indoor arena to compete in Lunge and Led Trail classes to win a Hi Point silver Halter buckle donated by Mal Anderson. Most were pretty obedient, with the only issue being the new bridge the WAQHA had purchased from Di Candilo Steel City and was being used and seen for the 1st time by the Yearlings. No monsters were under the bridge, but some of the Yearlings didn’t think so. The line-up for the presentations was great, plenty of new and up and coming ridden horses for the western show scene.

Seeing as the day’s events were running on time and flowing well, the lunch break was an hour break, with access to the indoor arena for warm up if required. Next events to be contested were the Hunter Under Saddle classes, with categories in the ridden section of the show ranging from Junior & Senior Horse, 2 yr old Horse, Amateur Junior & Senior Horse, AmQHA Junior & Senior Horse, Junior & Senior Youth as well as Select Amateur, plenty of events to choose from. Hunt Seat Equitation patterns included an in hand gallop as part of the pattern, once again requiring speed and obedience from the horses in the class. Prize money was allocated to Senior & Junior Horse classes throughout the show.

This year due to the generosity of Interior Dynamics and Safe N Sound Scaffolding, all youth events were free to enter, a fact much appreciated by parents of the youth riders. With plenty of youth in both categories, it was great to see such enthusiasm for showing their horses by the Youth. Joanna Hutson from QLD came over to WA accompanied by her parents Geoff and Tina, to compete at the show and was warmly welcomed by competitors and spectators alike. Generous owners once again loaned out their horses to youth at the show. Thanks to Kerri Blackaller, Phayme Tedd, Holly Locke, Janeen McRobert, Sue Benthien, Bill Cuzens, Sarah Lumley, Mal Anderson, Sharon Currie, Sonia Riches and Bridget De Bijl.

Saturday’s event finished about 5.00 pm, a nice time to finish and not too late to get organised for the next day. During the Saturday, another State Championship show was being held at the grounds. The Mini Horse Association show on both Saturday and Sunday was held on the grassed area next to the warm up arena, providing plenty of entertainment for the QH’s being ridden and warmed up.

Sunday’s events started at 8.30 am again, with the weather being perfect for a show, the sun shining, the horses gleaming and the bling was blinding. First classes were the prestigious Western Pleasure events, and with plenty of spectators in the stands to watch the classes, it was time to show. With a bridle for the Junior Horse WP donated by Wildwood QH’s and another show bridle for the Senior Horse WP, donated by Oz West Saddlery, the riders gave a great performance and really showed what WP is all about. More buckles donated by Mal Anderson for both categories of Amateur and Youth Pleasure were handed to winners. The photographers, Horse Play Photo’s once again donated some vouchers for our Bling awards, it’s an easy class, just bling it up and line up in the arena. This year more were in the line-up for judging, the judge and the photographer Dee, looking and checking out the speccy outfits and the glamour. Congratulations to all who participated and especially to those who won.

Once again the full range of categories was programmed, events running smoothly. As the show progressed the weather warmed up but nothing to complain about, a lovely 27 degrees, and with a whisper of a breeze it ensured that all riders and horses could compete at maximum effort with no distractions. Another show on the grounds during the Sunday was the local WA Buckskin Association, with some of the WAQHA State Show competitors attending both events.

Western Horsemanship was next with a neat precise pattern requiring attention to detail. Western Riding and Reining events were run with speed and agility by the competitors, unfortunately these events do not attract good class numbers but hopefully with regular programming, numbers will rise in the future.

A half hour lunch break was scheduled for the judge and workers, which included the set up of the trail classes. The pattern included about 30 poles for both lope and trot overs, another pattern to showcase a well educated and trained horse. And with the last of the buckles donated by Mal Anderson on the Youth and Amateur Trail classes, there was some keen competition contesting the events.

Hi Point Presentations for the day commenced with the $100 cash door prize being won by youth member Jade Riches, congratulations Jade. The Youth Raffle was next with prizes being chosen as winning tickets were announced. Sponsors were Australian Performance Horse Magazine, Horseman’s Trading Post, Sue Benthien, Debbie & Paul Cameron, Ragz 4 Nagz – Sue Hodges, Janeen McRobert, Palmer Wines, and I am sure there are many more sponsors and helpers, but if I have forgotten anyone, please accept my apologies.

The Di Candilo Family were thanked for once again being the major show sponsors and also for their ongoing and continual support of the WAQHA, very easy sponsors to deal with, as was Kerri & Steve Blackaller. Kerri & Steve were thanked for donating Hi Point buckles, organising the Judges encouragement award and for donating the Youth participation trophies. Thanks to Mal Anderson for donating a dozen buckles given out for Amateur and Youth classes. Sue Benthien was thanked for sponsoring the AmQHA classes and donating the Amateur flower garlands, Karen Nicoletto for both the Hi Point Youth rugs on behalf of Edingburg Rugs, Justin Sprigg and Imperial Floats for AmQHA Hi Point Buckles, and Palmer Wines for all our gifts to the sponsors. John McPhee donated a lovely silver western show bridle for a Youth encouragement award, the judge selecting Courtney Holden to receive this prize. Oz West Saddlery donated a beautiful show bridle for the Senior Horse Pleasure, with Wildwood QH’s donating a bridle for Junior Horse Pleasure. The AQHA Amateur Division donated 3 custom printed rugs for Showmanship, Hunt Seat Equitation and Western Horsemanship, and as always the AQHA who also support the WAQHA in our efforts to present shows to AQHA and WAQHA members.

Our judge was thanked as well as the many workers for the show; including Sarah Stuart, Tracy Bruce, Mary Treloar, Elise Young, Jeff Gates, Sue Benthien, Lia Lee, Mike Donovan, Janeen McRobert, Mindi Thompson and a very helpful Alex McCooke, who managed to sell all the raffle tickets and then sold most of the chocolates as well. Thanks to all who helped set up and dismantle the trail course at the end of the show, much appreciated. Photographers for all 3 days were Peter & Dee Fredericks – www.horseplayphotos.com.au. Videographer & photographer on Friday was Michelle Wrighton – www.southwestphotography.com.au

Full results on the website www.waqha.com.au. Next show April 26th 2009 Encouragement B Show @ Brookleigh, followed by the annual 2 day A class Blue Ribbon Futurity show incorporating the Western Classic events May 9/10th SEC Judge Mr John Goodworth AQHA NSW. Congratulations to all who competed at the Di Candilo Steel City 2009 WAQHA State Championship Show, well done to all 2009 State Champions.

WAQHA Youth clinic Update
Sunday 1st February 2009
Foxwood Farm Equestrian Centre
Clinicians : Mrs Melissa Maxwell & Mr Justin Sprigg

The WAQHA organised another clinic for the Youth riders in WA. The clinic was well attended considering the school term was due to start the following day, and also taking into account the extreme temperatures. Once again the clinic was held at Foxwood Farm Equestrian Centre, the indoor arena usually a great spot to ride was sweltering in the heat, the humidity inside was extremely high.

The two clinicians for the day, Mrs Melissa Maxwell & Mr Justin Sprigss were great with the Youth. Some of the Youth have been showing out and about quite competitively, in WA and on the east coast, some of the Youth were local competitors achieving great results and a few were complete newcomers to the Western industry and to the QH scene, so it was a mixed group during the day.

All the participants lining up for a picture at the start of the day.

The first requirement of the day was the official paperwork to be signed & clinic paid for, once those formalities had been attended to, the Youth brought their horses into the arena for a very important part of the day. The group photo! Once they had lined up and been photographed, it’s on with the clinic. The Youth were requested to name themselves out loud, allowing the clinicians to know the riders names. Hopefully the cameras on the day caught some images that can be loaded up onto the WAQHA website.

Nicholas Balchin & Jaiden Thompson

The showmanship was the first part of the clinic, with both clinicians going about and checking the fitting of show halters, explaining where needed and just checking all was fitted and in place. Cones were placed into the arena for 2 groups to ensure each Youth received an equal amount of information and instructions. The showmanship pattern was run several times by each Youth to allow them to learn the pattern and also to pinpoint areas they could work on, as well as showing their capabilities. While the Youth were waiting their turn for showmanship, some watermelon pieces were offered to them to keep them hydrated, and as they all thought that the horses should eat watermelon too, not much was left over.

Next were the Western Horsemanship patterns. As the arena was too soft and the humidity was quite high, the western pleasure section of the clinic was not included. The WHS patterns were run along the lines of the showmanship section of the clinic, a demo and then the riders completed and learnt the pattern. Simple patterns requiring concentration and precision were used, so the riders could learn to assess and improve their general handling skills.

Karyla Rainoldi riding Wilway Calico Zipper

Due to the weather, an hour break for lunch was welcomed. All horses were hosed down, watered and fed before the BBQ lunch got under way. The yards were under cover and the horses all seemed to be quite happy to be back in the yards munching on lunch, much like the spectators, riders and clinicians. A great BBQ sausage sizzle was organised, along with cool drinks, cold water, cakes, fruit and some very nice other goodies to buy for lunch. By this time the clouds arrived and breeze has picked up a tiny bit making the day a bit more enjoyable. The last section of the day was the English, Hunt Seat Equitation was held in the indoor arena. Once again patterns were marked out and the clinicians each instructed the Youth how to assess and execute the pattern successfully, precision being the main concern for pattern work.

Justin Spriggs clinician riding Arrum Georgina Cole riding Triandibo In the Red (chestnut horse)

Once all the riders had completed the patterns to their satisfaction, the clinic moved outdoors. Into the sunshine but also in the breeze. The outdoor arena is a very nice fenced and sanded area, with poles and jumps set up for use. First part of this Hunter Hack section, was to have the Youth complete the trot over pole work, setting them up for the Hunter Hack jumps if they were keen to try. There were 3 of the riders keen to try out the jumping, so the jumps were set low, a cross bar and a straight bar with spacings and ground poles set up. The first lot of jumps were about 1ft, then once this height was conquered, they were lifted to 2 ft. The parents and spectators sitting in the shade clapped and yelled out encouragement for the jump riders. And with the 2 older riders insisting the clinician prove that he could jump, they raced over to set the jumps to 3ft.

Chloe Blackaller riding Doc's Telopia

Thanks must go to Sue Ganzer for organizing all the food and drinks for the day, all the hungry people were extremely glad of the lunches available, Mary Treloar for organizing the office and doing the usual paperwork shuffle for our events, Elise Young for delivering the trail gear even though she was a bit under the weather, Tanya Harrington for helping out with the lunches. Thanks again to Roxanne Balchin from Foxwood Farm for always helping the WAQHA provide quality clinics and shows in a good venue.

Kelsie Harrington riding Heza Ginger Zipper (chestnut horse) and Carly Ganzer riding Dakota Zulu Kissah (dark bay horse).

Once again, there were quite a few borrowed horses on the day, so thanks must go to the owners of these horses who keep our Youth competing and keen to show in the Western Industry. Thanks to the youth also, for their attendance which ensures that future clinics will be organised. Our riders, owners and horses were : Jaiden Thompson riding Triandibo Infusion owned by Phayme Tedd, Chloe Maxwell riding Doc’s Telopia owned by Margo Norman, Georgina Cole riding Triandibo In The Red owned by Mary Treloar, Kelsie-Lee Harrington riding Heza Ginger Zipper owned by Sue Benthien, Carly Ganzer riding Dakota Zulu Kissah owned by Cathryn Aitken., Kayla Rainoldi riding Wilway Calico Zipper, Tarryn Potter riding Shandy, Nicolas Balchin riding Winderadeen Cee A Passer, and Arrum owned by Janeen McRobert (used for Hunter Hack work)

WAQHA AWARDS NIGHT 11TH OCTOBER 2008

By Carly Ganzer

The WAQHA held their annual awards night on the 11th of October 2008, at 7th Bar and Restaurant, situated in Midland. There was over 60 people in attendance, with a few people still fresh from their trip over east. Congratulations to those who competed over east. A very big thankyou must go to the generous sponsors for the awards night, Brooks Choice Relocations and DiCandilo Steel and City for making the stunning trophies and handing out the awards.

The AGM started at 7pm, with the awards shortly following after 8pm. The new committee for the 2008-2009 show season are: President-Mary Treloar, Vice President- Sue Benthien, 2nd VP- Mike Donovan, Sectary- Margaret Thompson, Points Collator- Paula DiCandilo, AQHA Rep- Ricky Glen, Am Div Rep- Janeen McRobert, Youth Rep- Carly Ganzer Committee Members- Elise Young, Jenny Barnes, Jessica Norton, Zhana DiCandilo, Sharon Currie, Valerie Sallur, Tracey Bruce and Sarah Guy.

We had two very special guests join us for the awards night, Jim and Gussie Saunders made the long trip from Albany to Perth to be given an AQHA Special Recognition award for their gelding Ringwould Jaguar. Most people would be aware that Ringwould Jaguar and his rider Sonja Johnson represented Australia in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, coming home with a silver medal. Now something many people might not be aware of is that Ringwould Jaguar is a first X Quarter Horse registered with the AQHA Studbook. Ringwould Jaguar A1-4528 is sired by Jensen’s Man Q-5574 (whose sire is imported stallion Trudy’s Man Q-1117 and dam’s father is by Pronto Mio Q-4, one of the first imported Quarter Horse stallions in WA). Jim and Gussie bred Jaguar, and 17 years later, they still own him. They surely have made sure that they that his potential has been fulfilled. This truly does show how versatile the Australian Quarter Horse is.

Congratulations to all the winners, runner-up’s, and to everyone that has competed at the shows last show season. Thank you to everyone for making the night a wonderful one, we look forward to working with you for the new show season, hoping it will be better than the last.
